DEAR FRIENDS, “Service to others," these are three simple words, but one powerful phrase. My late husband Muhammad Ali had a lifelong mission to help those in need. He traveled the world with an open mind and an open heart to learn about its people and to offer assistance wherever he could. Muhammad believed in inclusion. He always sought to include people from every walk of life, regardless of religion, race, culture or political philosophy. Muhammad truly loved people and perhaps, it was his humble beginnings that shaped his love for each and every person he met. He felt strongly about the power of serving others with love and empathy. Muhammad lived his life by example and often reminded me and our children, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” In this report, you will read about the Muhammad Ali Center’s programs and activities, how these initiatives are inspired by Muhammad’s Six Core Principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect and Spirituality, not to mention a generous sprinkling of the “Ali” spirit that threads its way throughout our daily work. There are stories of people, just like you, coming together for a common purpose − to serve others. For example, on January 17, 2017, the Muhammad Ali Center staff donated 75 hours of service in recognition of what would have been Muhammad Ali’s 75th birthday. Partnering with Together We Rise, the staff built 30 new red bicycles for children entering the foster care system in Louisville. You will also discover the inspiring achievements of the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award recipi- ents. These awards recognize and celebrate individuals who are serving others in communities around the world, improving the lives of everyday people, and much, much more. Muhammad Ali lived his life by example. He connected with people. He let them see inside his heart, that they too, could serve each other by just a simple act of compassion, one day at a time, one person at a time. Each of us has that same opportunity, that same power to make an impact. And in honor of Muhammad’s memory, I humbly ask you to lift your torch high, to shine your own light, to share your own gifts, embracing a spirit of selflessness, kindness and love. For when you do, you will show that there is ALI IN ALL OF US, and the glow from your torches can truly light the world and your service to others. Gratefully yours, LONNIE ALI CO–FOUNDER
